Bhattarai meets Australian PM

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Saturday met his Australian counterpart Julia Gillard on the sidelines of Rio+20 Conference and exchanged views on matters of bilateral interests between the two countries.

The Australian PM said that her country would augment its economic cooperation with Nepal in the days ahead and would like to engage more closely with Nepal for that purpose.

She pledged her support for the genuine interests and concerns of the LDCs. PM Bhattarai appreciated the constructive cooperation of Australia and the existing level of relationships between the two countries, emphasising on the need to strengthen them, according to a press release.

PM Bhattarai highlighted the development needs and available opportunities in Nepal, its investment priorities for the transformation of economy and the challenges for sustainable development. Gillard shared her views on the outcome of the Rio+20 Conference and expressed her desire to work with Nepal in the international and multilateral forums for achieving common interests.

Views were also shared on the political situation of Nepal and the way forward with the peace and constitution-writing processes.
