KATHMANDU, JUN 25 - Chairman of the newly-formed Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) Mohan Baidya on Sunday told President Ram baran Yadav that his party must be treated as the third largest political force in the country, alongside the NC-UML combine and the UCPN (Maoist). The CPN-M considers the Madhesi Morcha a “regional political force” and not a national party.

In a meeting, senior leaders of the new party—Baidya, General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa, Secretary CP Gajurel and two Standing Committee members, Dev Gurung and Netra Bikram Chand—also urged the President to include the CPN-M in all decisions and consultations.

The leaders also explained to the President how the mainstream political parties failed to grasp the national agenda, failed to deliver peace and constitution and why there was a need for a new political force, according to the President’s Press Adviser, Rajendra Dahal.

According to sources, the leaders also said a revolution was needed if the current status quo continued. They said the current situation and political and social structure cannot give way out to the impeding disparities.

In response, the President advised the Maoist leaders to opt for a peaceful path and not go for another war in the name of revolt and revolution. “I agree that every party has its won faith and beliefs, but only a peaceful democratic path can offer a solution to problems. I know you can play a very important role at this juncture and there is no alternative to consensus,” Dahal quoted the President as telling the leaders.

The Maoist leaders also urged the President to take a lead in ending the current crisis, sack Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai at the earliest and hold a roundtable conference by including all disgruntled sections of the society.

“Only four parties cannot resolve the current deadlock and we urged the President to take a lead in bringing about national consensus by including new forces that are agitating,” Baidya told reporters after the meeting with the President.

“We do not agree on the solutions offered by the three big parties and the Madhesi Morcha,” Baidya told reporters. “Other forces, including us, must be included in the decision making process.”

He added that the disbanded Constituent Assembly’s revival and holding fresh elections are impossible and that a roundtable conference is the only solution.

Sunday’s meeting was their first face-to-face with the President following the formation of the new party on June 18.
