KATHMANDU, JUN 25 - Jagdamba Synthetics annou-nced on Friday that it would be establishing a factory to manufacture laminated bags within the next three months.
The company, which is a subsidiary of the Shanker Group, said that its move came after the government decided last May to make it mandatory for cement and limestone manufacturers and importers to use laminated bags. “We welcome the decision of the government. As laminated bags are being used in most countries including our neighbours and are environment friendly, we have decided to set up a manufacturing unit,” said Sahil Agrawal, joint managing director of the Shanker Group. “We are investing around Rs 700 million in the initial stage. The annual output will be 100 million laminated bags.” Customers pay for 50 kg of cement in a bag, but they only get around 48 to 48.5 kg due to loss during loading and unloading. This problem will be solved once laminated bags are used. According to the company, laminated bags are environment friendly and water proof, reduce dust and are much stronger than the bags being used at present.
Even though laminated bags will add to the price of cement, customers will benefit, said Agrawal. “The price will be higher by around Rs 10 per bag, but customers will get exactly 50 kg of cement as stated on the bag,” he added. Agrawal claimed that Jagdamba Synthetics is the largest woven sacks manufacturing company in Asia. The company fulfils 40 percent of the requirement for woven sacks.
Meanwhile, Jagdamba Steels, another subsidiary of the Shanker Group, felicitated mountaineer Dadendi Sherpa for taking the company’s flag to the top of Everest. “We are the number one steel manufacturer in the country, and Sherpa’s effort has helped us to reach the top of the world,” Agrawal said.
