INARUWA, JUN 26 -

Water level at the Sapta Koshi river witnessed a considerable surge on Monday morning, prompting officials to flash the alert light and hoist red flags at the Koshi Barrage. The lights and the flags symbolise the water level crossing the danger mark.

The water flow on Monday afternoon stood at 157,205 cusec, the highest for this year. With no let up in the rise in the water level, 22 floodgates at the barrage were lifted to ease the flow.

The water level started rising since last week. It, however, reached an alarming high on Monday.

The measurement conducted at 8 am showed the water flow at 109,720 cusec, officials at the barrage control room said, and it rose by the hour till the last measurement of 3:15 pm showed 157,205 cusec. With the water level crossing the danger mark, Koshi officials and technicians of both Nepal and India have been asked to remain on alert.

According to Dinesh Rajauriya of the Eastern Regional Irrigation Development Division Office in Inarwua, water flow at the barrage measured 160,562 cusec just before Koshi breached the eastern embankment from Paschim Kusaha on Aug 18, 2008. Monday’s measurement was just 3,357 cusec lower. Rajauriya, however, said there was no immediate threat to the barrage and the eastern embankment.
