KATHMANDU, JUN 26 -

Prominent posts at the Tribhuvan University (TU) have been lying vacant for the past six months due to differences among various professors’ unions on sharing of the posts.

Around two dozens key posts, including that of deans, assistant deans, directors, deputy examination controllers and the Examination Board members, have remained vacant since the expiry of the previous post holders’ four-year tenure. Regular administrative works and decisions regarding affiliation, examination dates and the publication of results have been affected due to absence of these top level officials.

The demand of three major unions—the Nepal Professors’ Association (NPA) aligned with the UCPN (Maoist), the Nepali Congress-affiliated Democratic Professors’ Union (DPU) and the CPN-UML-affiliated Nepal Progressive Professors’ Association (NPPA)—for the post of dean at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) is the main reason behind the delay.

“We have a two-third majority at the IoM. Therefore, it is our right to demand the post of dean,” said Chinta Mani Pokhrel, general secretary of the DPU. The NPPA, meanwhile, has been advocating on in support of former dean Dr Arun Sayami. But, doctors close to the DPU have warned of an indefinite strike if Sayami is reappointed.

Institute of Forestry and Agriculture, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Humanities  and Faculty of Science and Technology are also without deans and assistant deans for  past five months.
