JUL 01 -
To coincide with the week of the International Day Against Drug Abuse (June 26), ‘A Call for Togetherness, from the Road of Kathmandu—Watering Awareness’, an event raising awareness of drug addiction and the plight of street children was held at Rastriya Naachghar, Jamal on Friday. The programme included a photo exhibition, documentary film screenings, live music and a book release.
The films screened were Flowers in Dust, a documentary about the scores of Indian migrants living in Nepali slums and Mero Ateet, another documentary about drug addiction and its consequences. Both films were directed by Sushil Bahadur Chettri, who himself grew up on the streets. “Being someone who started his journey earning his living on the streets, I feel for the situation of these children, and that is what motivated me to make this documentary,” said Chettri in reference to Flowers in Dust.
Drug counsellor Santosh Ghimire, founder of Transfor-mation Nepal, a rehabilitation centre, was also present at the programme and claimed that “drugs are not a disease but a disability”.
The programme was attended by street children and sought to raise funds for their rehabilitation and to wean addicts off of their dependency on drugs.
