KATHMANDU, JUL 01 -
Expressing deep concern over the protracted political impasse, visiting Vice-minister at the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Ai Ping urged Nepali leaders to reach a consensus as soon as possible.
Ai met UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, NC President Sushil Koirala, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik) Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar on Saturday.
Ai, who arrived in Kathmandu on Friday evening, is accompanied by senior Chinese officials from the Foreign Ministry, including the Director General of South Asia, the Nepal Desk chief and South Asian researchers. He is here to assess the current political situation and strengthen party relations. He will not meet any government official at this time, said a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy.
At the meeting, Ai spoke with leaders about the reasons for the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly and the status of the peace and constitution-writing process while reiterating China’s desire to see an early restoration of peace, stability and development in Nepal. Ai said he was hopeful that the political parties would be able to forge consensus and resolve outstanding issues.
“China is impatient with the political process here. Nepal has lost a great opportunity to uplift its economic condition, situated between China and India,” Ai is quoted as having said during the meeting. Ai was interested in Nepal’s future development model and strategies and suggested that leaders pay attention while restructuring the state, said Milan Tuladhar, a UML leader who was privy to the meeting.
Ai shared examples on how China adopted and corrected different development models. He told the leaders that the constitution-writing process was extremely complex which took China five years to complete.
According to Tuladhar, Ai assured the leaders that if Nepal establishes lasting peace and stability, China will invest for its economic development.
