SARLAHI, JUL 15 -
CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal has said that the ruling alliance of the UCPN (Maoist) and some Madhes-based parties was hell-bent on imposing an authoritarian rule in the country on various pretexts.
Addressing a programme at Lalbandi in Sarlahi district on Saturday, Khanal accused the present government of violating the constitution time and again. He said that his party had urged the democratically-elected President to stop the unconstitutional activities of the government.
The UML chief said that the prime minister's resignation would be the first step to consensus. "The future of the nation depends on the present government. There will be no consensus as long as it remains," he said.
Khanal ruled out the possibility of holding the Constituent Assembly elections on the date set by the ruling coalition. "It seems impossible to conduct the polls on November 22 even if the political parties reach consensus on the matter. The announcement of the election is just a ploy [of the government]," he said.
In another context, Khanal said the UML was yet to decide officially on the possible ways to end the ongoing imbroglio. He is of the opinion that a referendum, fresh election and the reinstatement of the dissolved Constituent Assembly are among the possible alternatives.
