KAILALI, JUL 13 -

Gita Devi Chaudhary, a freed kamaiya, has made a name for herself as a hairdresser.

After being trained in hairdressing by the Freed Kamaiya Society five years ago, Gita Devi of Darakha VDC-4 in Kailali opened her own parlour at Sunkhad, with Rs 5,000 provided by the society.

Despite initially struggling to establish her business, she now earns between Rs 600 to Rs 700 a day and is supporting her five-member family on the income.

“It was not possible to survive on the five katthas of land that the government gave us. Produce from the land hardly lasted five months,” said Gita Devi, who did various odd jobs before starting out in hairdressing.

Her hard work and perseverance have paid off as she now employs a helper at the hairdressing parlour and also owns another beauty salon. Her husband too helps her run the salon and parlour. The Chaudhary family has modern appliances and sofas at home.

Gita Devi is also able to send her three children to school.

“We are living a happy life,” she said. “It is good to live on our own rather than depending on others for sustenance.”
