BANKE, JUL 01 -
The Banke District Court on Thursday handed down a sentence of 29 years in jail to Sonu Halwai, accused of abducting and subsequently murdering Nirmala Shrestha, 35, of Nepalgunj.
A single bench of Judge Krishna Kamal Adhikari also ruled that Halwai compensate the victim’s family to the tune of Rs 500 a day from the date of abduction until he is sent to prison.
The court suspended transactions of Halwai’s properties to ensure that the victim’s family is compensated.
“The accused was charged with abduction and murder. Based on the charges, the court sentenced Halwai to prison,” Assistant District Attorney Yam Bahadur Baniya said.
Halwai, with the help of Akaram Halwai and Raphik Behana, abducted Shrestha on August 19, 2010 from Nepalgunj and took her to India.
Police said the trio fled after murdering Shrestha in a Lucknow hotel two days following the abduction. Halwai was arrested in Nepalgunj but the two other accused are still at large. Police, who suspect that the duo is hiding in India, are searching for them.
