BANKE, AUG 12 -

Floods have destroyed crops planted on around 100 hectares at four VDCs in Banke district.

According to the District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), Rapti river flooding entered Holiya, Betahani, Bankatti and Kamdi VDCs and destroyed crops such as paddy, corn and pulse.

Huge swathes of farmland have been filled with silts and sand, while saplings of the crops were swept away. “The crops, which were growing well, were washed away by floods,” said Ram Sharan Nisad of Holia VDC-6. Many VDCs are at high risk of floods every year.

Ram Kumar Sukla of Holia said the problem of floods has been stinging these VDC owing to lack of a permanent embankment in Rapti and blockage of natural water flows of the river and small streams due to the construction of Laxmanpur and Kalkatta embankments by India. “Houses and farmland have been filled with silts and sand.”

Meanwhile in Myagdi district, a flood triggered by heavy rains submerged 25 houses at Campus Chok in Beni. Police said that damage caused by flooding is yet to be ascertained.

In Palpa, a flood has swept away a peltric set and all equipment used for generating electricity, cutting off power at Mythyal VDC-9 and forcing local residents to live in dark.
