KATHMANDU, AUG 08 -

Newly-appointed Chief Secretary Lilamani Poudel on Tuesday sent a number of protesting groups and senior civil servants seeking entry into the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) back to their ministries instead of allowing them to see the PM.

Poudel, who assumed office on Monday, told the groups that PM Baburam Bhattarai should not be “dragged into sundry issues” and should be allowed “to concentrate on larger national and political issues.”

At least half a dozen delegations were instead advised to visit ministries concerned, instead of hounding the PM with their grievances.

Poudel told representatives of the Nepal LPG Industry Association to meet officials at the Ministry of Supply and Commerce.

Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Supply Lal Mani Joshi, who had also accompanied the delegation, was told to hold talks with the agitating gas dealers. “I do not look into this case. It is under the purview of the Commerce Ministry. Whatever recommendation or consideration that you need, please write to the PMO, we will look into it,” Poudel told Joshi.

Another delegation of transport entrepreneurs also could not get to see the PM. The chief secretary accepted their greetings but refused to hear their demands. “I have changed the working style of the PMO. It no longer looks into minor issues. If you have any problem, please go and talk to ministries concerned,” he told them.

Also, a group of women section officers who have been serving since long on a contract basis also reached the PMO to solicit their grievances with Poudel. They were also shown the way to the Ministry of General Administration.

Three other delegations representing the Tourism sector, local development and locals of Kathmandu suffering from the road extension drive, also met the same fate.

“The PMO alone cannot resolve all issues and the PM does not have time to handle them all. I have changed my working style where all the ministries should take the lead in solving problems.”
