CHITWAN, AUG 08 -
Gunjanagar VDC in the district is under threat from a rather large and ferocious menace. Batuli Gurung of the VDC said that around a dozen rhinoceros enter their farmlands every night and eat up all the crops. She claimed they even attack people.
Gurung said that most villagers stay awake and vigilant at night to ward off the rhinos when they enter the village.
Villagers said that rhinos’ rampage had continued for long and no efforts had been initiated to resolve the problem, even though the local community forest and the District Forest Office were repeatedly told about the nightly invasion.
“We have no idea how to get rid of the rampaging animals. We will have no option but to leave our farmlands uncultivated if the problem persists,” said Mithu Pariyar.
She said villagers are chasing away the rhinos with lit torches, which isn’t very effective.
Mohani Lal Ghimire, member of the Majhuwa community forest users’ group, said rhinos can also attack villagers if they do not remain alert at night.
Without a proper solution, villagers are having a tough time dealing with the endangered animals.
