KATHMANDU, AUG 12 -

With incumbent dean Dr Kumud Kumar Kafle set to retire on August 14, doctors at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) have warned of protests as the vice-chancellor’s (VC) office is yet to name Dr Kafle’s successor.

Dr Kafle was appointed dean of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) on July 7 after one of the doctors, Dr Govinda KC, went on a fast-unto-death. Following pressure from various quarters, the VC appointed Dr Kafle, who had only a month left until retirement from the institution. The VC office hasn’t responded to the names of two assistant deans, campus chief and assistant campus chief as forwarded by Dr Kafle from among senior and experienced officials. Dr Kafle expressed his dismay at the VC office’s inability to form a recommendation committee for the post of dean or even provide consent for the recommended candidates.

“Whenever I talk to the office-bearers at the VC, they say they are holding discussions on the names of candidates,” said Dr Kafle.

Meanwhile, Dr KC said he will once again resort to  fast-unto-death from Monday if the authorities fail to appoint a new dean based on eligibility and seniority and not by political appointment by Sunday night.

Dr Dinesh Binod Pokhrel, president of the TU Teachers’ Association, Maharajgunj, also warned of protests if the VC office politically appoints anyone to the major posts.  “It has been almost three weeks since the present dean proposed the names for other senior vacant posts on the basis of seniority and eligibility,” he said.

“However, the VC hasn’t replied yet. This is a clear indication that they only want political appointments at this reputed hospital,” Dr Pokhrel added.
