KATHMANDU, AUG 08 -

CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has said that his party would not accept ethnic federalism abandoning UML’s official line of multi-ethnic federalism and asked Prime Minister Bhattarai for clarification on his recent remarks.

Speaking to reporters in the Capital on Tuesday, Khanal made it clear that UML would not approve of ethnic federalism under any circumstance. Instead, his party “is ready for fresh polls” after the formation of a national consensus government. “We will not participate in any election under the leadership of the incumbent government,” said Khanal. He also called on Prime Minister Bhattarai to clarify his remarks that “the country was being controlled from the outside”. Khanal was vehement that the prime minister had no right to stay if he failed to prove that his statements were false.

The UML chief said that the UCPN (Maoist) would be proven a traitor if it was true that the party had written a letter to India promising political transformation, as alleged by recent reports.

Reiterating that the present government should quit, he said a consensus government is the only way out of the present political crisis. “The incumbent coalition of the Maoists and Madhes-based parties cost the country dear. The country cannot find an outlet without an end to this coalition.” He warned that the government would be forcibly removed through protests if the Maoist party did not come forward for consensus.
