KATHMANDU, JUN 28 -

One month after its global launch, Samsung Galaxy S3—the most anticipated smartphone of the year—has finally made its way to the Nepali market. International Marketing Services (IMS), the sole authorised distributor of Samsung Mobiles in Nepal, took wraps off the third generation Samsung Galaxy phone on Wednesday.

IMS Chairman Dipak Malhotra, its CEO Bishal Acharya and Miss Nepal 2012 first runner-up Nagma Shrestha jointly unveiled the phone amid a programme in Kathmandu.

Launching Galaxy S3, Malhotra said that the new handset would redefine the smartphone experience of Nepali users. “The Galaxy S3 responds intuitively and naturally to human use and interaction. It balances ergonomics with intuitive use so that the device becomes an extension of the user,” said  Malhotra.

According to IMS, over 300 units of the phone have already been booked prior to its formal launch. Keeping in mind the craze, IMS has imported 700 units in the first lot.

The third generation Galaxy phone is equipped with Ice Cream Sandwich V4.0.4 Android operating system. The phone has a Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU.  It has a 4.8-inch super AMOLED touch screen with a multi-touch function. The device comes with an 8 mega-pixel camera along with a 1.9 mega pixel front facing camera. Its rear camera has various enticing features like auto focus, LED flash, simultaneous HD video and image recording capability, geo tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization among others.

Besides, the phone incorporates various smart-features such as “smart stay” which tracks the eyes of the user so that the display won’t dim or turn off as long as the user is looking at it, “s-voice” which enables users to dial the number through a voice command. The new device also boasts “all share cast” which pairs TVs, laptops or tablets with wi-fi; “pop-up-play” that divides the screen space allowing users to play games and chat simultaneously; “best photo” which chooses the best picture among all taken and “NFC” which allows users to share contents like video by taping the phones together.

According to IMS, the phone will initially be distributed by Ncell for  12 equal monthly installments of Rs 6,499. To get Galaxy S3, customers will have to have an account at Nabil Bank or Bank of Kathmandu. Based on their certification, Ncell will sell the S3 to the customers by bundling a service of its Pro plans free of cost for 12 months. Sanju Koirala, corporate communication manager of Ncell, said that customers buying the S3 will get 700 minutes worth of local calls, 700 local SMS and 70 MB data service of Ncell, amounting to Rs 999 per month for free. “Ncell has always been innovative and we are happy to associate with the most innovative handset available in the market today. It’s a lethal combination,” she said. IMS will start selling the handset after a month.

IMS claims that Samsung has already captured 80 percent market share in the smartphone segment and it plans to expand the figure by 10 percent this year. “When it comes to smartphone segment we don’t have any competitor. We are number one players in terms of value and with many such innovative products in the pipeline we are sure to turn number one in terms of volume as well,” said Malhotra. Even though IMS has not disclosed its price, the handset is said to cost around Rs 70,000.
