KATHMANDU, JUL 12 -

The state-owned Law Book Management House (Kanun Kitab Khana) has stopped translating documents effective Wednesday.

The House cited the government's decision to hand over the translation work to notaries in accordance with the Nepal Notary Act.

"Many documents of Nepalis translated by the notaries were rejected by many countries. We had already decided not to accredit the translated documents by the notaries," said a Foreign Ministry official on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the media.

Translated documents without the stamp of the Foreign Ministry are not considered valid. "Many people have been facing problems due to this dual provision. We cannot stamp documents translated by private agencies. We only stamp those translated by the Kitab Khana," said the official.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has called a meeting on Thursday to look into the matter.

The Attorney General, MoFA secretaries and representatives from the Law and Justice Ministry, Law Reform Commission, notaries and the Kitab Khana are set to attend the meeting.

The Nepal Notary Public Association (NNPA) has been accusing the MoFA of interfering in its right to translate documents as provided by the Notary Act.

The NNPA also has been asking the government to scrap the Law Book Management Committee, a temporary committee that translates government documents.
