Call to ensure voting rights

KATHMANDU, JUL 12 -

The youth wing of the Nepali Congress has urged the Election Commission to ensure the voting right of youths and hold elections on the basis of political consensus.

Submitting a memorandum to the EC on Wednesday, Nepal Tarun Dal drew the commission’s attention saying that thousands of youths will be deprived of their right to vote in case another Constituent Assembly election was held in the present circumstances. “It will be meaningless to conduct any election if 180,0000 youths were deprived of their right to vote,” NTD Chairman Udaya Shumsher Rana stated in the memorandum submitted to EC Commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung.

The Article 63 (7) of the Interim Constitution says that the Nepali citizen who has attained the age of 18 years by December 15, 2000 shall be entitled to vote.

If the CA election as announced by the government is held without amending this provision, thousands of youths will be deprived of polling rights.
