KATHMANDU, JUL 12 -

Teachers of the country’s oldest university say they will hit streets to fulfill their demands, including salary hike. Floating 22-point charter of demands, the Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association (TUTA) on Wednesday publicised its protest programme and warned of a stern strike if the demands were not fulfilled on time.

At a press meet in the Capital, the TU teachers have demanded salary hike and uniform allowance on par with government officials who have been enjoying fringe benefit for the past one year. They have also demanded accident insurance, permanent status to temporary lecturers who have been serving in the university and no age bar for study leave. Their other demands include permanent status to the trainers who have been working in the TU for years as temporary employees and the extension of age bar for study leave. “We have received commitments from the authority several times,” said TUTA General Secretary Prem Raj Khaniya. “Now we are forced to take to the streets as our demands have not been addressed.”

Earlier, a TUTA delegation met Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai at the UCPN (Maoist) headquarters in Paris Danda and drew his attention towards their demands.
