KATHMANDU, JUN 24 -
Sukarma, a folk ensemble from Kathmandu, is concluding its country-wide tour on Sunday in Birgunj. The Ncell Sukarma Yaatra travelled to nine cities across the country, beginning June 11.
Sukarma began its tour in Baglung and have travelled to Pokhara, Palpa, Dang, Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar, Nepalgunj and Narayanghat. The band, which consists of Dhruvesh Chandra Regmi on sitar, Pramod Upadhyay on tabala, Shyam Nepali on sarangi, Anil Dhital on guitar and Umesh Pundit on flute, collaborated with local musicians and played an eclectic combination of folk, classical and fusion.
“Despite the rough weather, lots of people attended the concert,” said Shekhar Kharel, coordinator of the event. According to Kharel, the audience, consisting of a diverse group of local politicians, social service workers, security personnel and litterateurs, reacted with enthusiasm to the show.
The concerts, sponsored by Ncell, were managed by Sukarma’s promoters Quick Silver Nepal and were aired live through local radio stations. “‘Ncell Sukarma Yatra is part of our support to Nepali music and literature,” said Sanju Koirala, corporate communication manager at Ncell.
Koirala said that since concerts and entertainment programmes normally take place in the Capital, Ncell wanted to bring such events to different parts of the country and help promote Nepali music.
