CHITWAN, JUL 08 -
The agitating former Maoist combatants opting for integration in the Nepal Army (NA) have put off their protest in the PLA third division camp, Chitwan.
Hoping that the integration would be “dignified”, a gathering of the disgruntled PLA fighters here decided to suspend their protest for the time being on Saturday. The former fighters told the media that they postponed the protest as the authorities concerned stalled the selection process.
“We hope that there will be further flexibility on NA norms in the upcoming selection process. We request the government, political parties and civil society to make the selection process respectable,” said battalion deputy commander Devi Prasad Dhakal.
The former PLA men boycotted the selection process that officially began on Wednesday with their six-point demand on Friday. Their demands include a lump sum payment for the combatants choosing voluntary retirement, scrapping of the NA’s selection standards and their dignified integration.
The NA team deployed for the selection process is awaiting the government’s decision. “We asked the government to stall the process thinking that the selection should not hurt PLA friends. We hope the upcoming selection process will be more flexible,” an NA official told the Post.
Six hundred twenty-five former combatants have been awaiting their integration into the NA from this cantonment alone. Seventy of them filled the forms for the selection on Wednesday and Thursday.
