Quitting govt without accord suicidal: Dahal

KATHMANDU, JUL 12 -

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said leaving the government without striking agreement on contentious issues of the new constitution will be ‘suicidal’ for the party.

In his political document presented to the party’s Politburo on Monday, the Maoist boss firmly stood in favour of the government. The opposition parties have

been saying Bhattarai’s resignation is the only option to end the protracted political deadlock.

However, in a meeting with opposition parties, Dahal pledged that he is ready to recall Bhattarai if it would lead to consensus. To mount pressure on the PM to step down, the opposition parties have refused to sit for dialogue.

According to Politburo member Hemanta Prakash Oli, Dahal, in his 38-page document, says that the party must stay in government until all parties agree on contentious issues of the new constitution and the mechanism to promulgate it.

The government has been a prickly issue among political parties ever since the demise of the Constituent Assembly on May 27.

In a meeting with CPN-Maoist leaders a few days ago, Dahal said that he cannot call back Bhattarai from the government.

However, Dahal criticised some decisions taken by the government, including signing of the BIPPA with India and preparations to hand over the management of the Tribhuvan International Airport to an Indian company. He also mentions the government’s failure to provide relief to conflict-affected cadres of his party.

The Maoist Politburo meeting that began on Monday is under way. Members studied Dahal’s political document in Wednesday’s session. “We spent five hours reading the document,” said Oli.

To maintain the document’s secrecy, the party has not allowed its leaders to take the document home. One leader told the Post that Dahal had issued a circular to its leaders not to leak vital information from the document.
