KATHMANDU, JUL 12 -

Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Ahmed Saleem visited the Saarc Information Centre (SIC) in Kathmandu on Wednesday. Saleem was accompanied by Dhan Bahadur Oli, director of the Saarc Secretariat.

During the visit, SIC Director Laxmi Bilas Koirala updated the secretary general on various activities of the centre, including training programmes and media fellowships that he said continue in the future.

Hailing SIC as one of the important regional centres of the Saarc, Secretary General Saleem said that it has the enormous responsibility of reaching out to audiences in the region for the projection of Saarc activities.

Saleem said that Saarc’s 26 years of existence was in itself a remarkable thing but it should not be a reason for complacence. He also underscored the need of setting up proactive communication services for effective dissemination of information on the regional grouping.

“We see a greater role of SIC in the collection and dissemination of information in the region, with established links to all Saarc mechanisms,” the secretary general said.

Similarly, Saarc Secretariat Director Oli stressed the need for a change in policy to seek better working modalities and strengthen SIC for greater reach of Saarc activities in the region.

Senior Programme Manager Pankaj Pandey had presented an overview of SIC’s activities and its plans.
