TUTH row: Indefinite closure looms

KATHMANDU, JUL 04 - A three-member sub-committee formed to propose names of three senior and experienced persons for the post of dean at the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), on Tuesday decided to resign. The committee had been mandated to submit the names by Wednesday.

The move is likely to bring agitating TUTH doctors back on the warpath. The doctors said they plan to resume the protest they had withdrawn on June 24 after the Vice Chancellor's office promised to address their demands by July 4.

Tuesday's decision of the members to step down was confirmed by the sub-committee's chief Arvinda Lal Bhumi and one of the members Tara Sapkota.

“We were given limited time, while the process is long,” Bhumi said. “We failed to collect even the bio-data until Tuesday afternoon. There was no way we could have completed the task in a day. So we decided to resign.”

Sapkota said he has already submitted his resignation to the rector at the TU.

TUTH doctors are up in arms for the past eight months. They have been demanding vacant posts of the dean, two assistant deans, campus chief and assistant campus chief be filled from among the senior and experienced staff and not through political appointment.

Dr Dinesh Pokhrel, the president of the TU Teachers' Association, Maharajgunj unit, told the Post that the three-member committee could do nothing concrete.

“If the VC's office fails to come up with alternatives to address our issue, we will resume our protest programmes in a day or two. And that would mean indefinite shutdown of the hospital too,” Dr Pokhrel said.
