KATHMANDU, JUL 08 -

The road expansion campaign that resumed last week in the Capital after a short hiatus continued on Saturday too. The Kathmandu Valley Town Development Authority (KVTDA) in collaboration with the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division bulldozed illegally occupied roadside infrastructure at Subidhanagar.

Authorities dismantled walls, pavements and other small structures at 7am on Sangam and Sugam Marg, that were built encroaching on the street. However, not a single building was razed to the ground.

The KVTDA has so far pulled down around 45 kilometres of structures and around 75 houses since the the campaign started seven months ago.

According to the KVTDA, an estimated 315 structures, including private buildings, will have to be bulldozed if the government presses ahead with the broad-road initiative. KVTDA chief Bhai Kaji Tiwari said the immediate targets are the road stretches of Sankhamul-Baneshwor, Kalimati-Kuleshwor, Kalimati-Swayambhu and Tahchal-Soaltee.  “We will first concentrate on the main routes. The inner roads will be widened after that.”

The campaign has recently come under severe criticism for not completing the expansion work on time. According to Tiwari, an additional 31 kilometres will be widened in the next few months. The government has been expanding roads based on a 1977 land survey.
