KATHMANDU, AUG 08 -

China’s Ambassador to Nepal Yang Houlan said on Tuesday that the recent Nepal visit of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao encouraged Chinese investors to make investment here.

The Chinese premier’s visit, which took place in January, was for promoting socio-economic and cultural relations between the two countries, he said, while inaugurating the Lalitpur Chapter of Nepal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCCI). “Mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual support have always been at the heart of Nepal China relationship.”

The ambassador also stressed on the need for boosting people-to-people contact between Nepal and China in order to develop win-win cooperation.

On last year’s slowdown in China’s economic growth, he said, “The decline in economic growth rate was not only because of the global economic crisis, but also due to the regulation and control policy of the Chinese government.”

Rajesh Kaji Shrestha, chairman of NCCCI, said the opening of chamber’s Lalitpur chapter was to strengthen people-to-people trade relationship between Nepal and China. NCCCI was established in 1999 with an aim to expand trade with China and has so far established 12 local chapters.

“As Nepali handicraft products are in high demand in the Chinese market, NCCCI want to establish a direct contact between the people of Lalitpur to promote Nepali handicrafts there,” he said.

According to him, NCCCI’s local chapter will work on promoting certain products having comparative advantage and boost exports to China. “This will help end the Kathmandu-centric trade relationship with China,” he said.
