KATHMANDU, JUN 25 - Nepali Ambassador to South Korea Kaman Singh Lama has condemned Indian Ambassador to South Korea Vishnu Prakash’s statement that Mount Everest lies in India.

Prakash, in an interview with the Korea Times daily on June 10, had claimed that Mt Everest lies in the Indian territory. “The northeastern part of India, where it borders China, offers the most beautiful scenic views thanks to Mt Everest,” Prakash had said. Lama raised concern over the matter, citing it as an attack on Nepal’s sovereignty. “We cannot forgive statements that raise questions over the sovereignty of the nation. When I talked to Prakash, he assured me that he would address the matter through the same paper but has not done so,” said Lama. He said a letter was sent to the Indian Embassy and statements were taken from the reporter as well. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) also dispatched a rejoinder to the Korea Times claiming that the Indian envoy’s statement was incorrect and misleading. “Mt Everest lies very much in Nepal so we have sent a separate rejoinder to the editor of the Korea Times over the published ite m,” said Arjun Bahadur Thapa, spokesman for the MoFA. “Such statements will discourage Korean mountaineers who want to visit Nepal and climb Mt Everest,” said officials at Nepal’s foreign ministry.
