U-19 asia cup: Nepal crush Malaysia

KATHMANDU, JUN 25 - Nepal shrugged off Saturday’s defeat to Pakistan with a convincing 107-run victory over Malaysia in their second match in the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup at the Royal Selangor Club, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday.

Sagar Pun blasted 71 runs after openers Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee put on 74 runs as Nepal compiled 247 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs. Defending the target, Rahul Vishwakarma took five wickets in his eight economical overs as Malaysia were bundled out for 140 runs in 43 overs.

Opting to bat first, Khakurel (33) and Airee (39) gave a good start to Nepal before both fell in the space of two balls. Naresh Budhayair and captain Prithu Baskota could not do much with the bat, both being dismissed in the 24th over with Nepal reeling at 90-4. Pun and Rajesh Pulami Magar then shared an 84-run stand to rescue Nepal from the crunch situation. Pun’s 90-ball stay was studded with four boundaries and three sixes, while Magar carted three fours on his way to 39 runs off 45 balls. Lower order batsmen Hasim Ansari and Bhuvan Karki contributed quick-fire 21 and 23 runs respectively to help Nepal post a challenging target for the hosts.

In reply, Malaysia could not score runs freely against the discipline Nepali bowling unit but somehow preserved their wickets till the first 10 overs. Baskota broke their resistance in the 12th over with just 26 runs on the board. Pun sent back another opener two runs later. Vishwakarma, who was later adjudged man-of-the-match, came in to rip through the hosts’ batting line-up, reducing them to 111 runs for eight. Avinash Karn then dismissed two tail-enders and packed up Malaysian innings.

In the other group match, Pakistan edged India by one run in the nail-biting finish.

Nepal will play their last group match against South Asian giants India on Tuesday at the Bayuemas Oval.
