SINDHULI, JUN 25 - Police seized 360 tonnes of smuggled chemical fertilisers from Sindhuli on Sunday. The fertilisers were supplied to Khotang by the Agriculture Input Company (AIC) Birgunj.
The fertilisers were confiscated from Jaya Buddha Cold Stores and Jaya Chandrama Stores in Sindhulamadi. Police also arrested four individuals— Dormani Poudel of Diktel, Khotang; Durgananda Chaudhary of Udaypur Triyug municipality; Durga Thakur of Bardibaas, Mahottari; and Jayman Tamang, proprietor of Jaya Chandra Stores.
The arrested have been kept in police custody under the Black Marketing and other Social Offenses and Punishment Act
Police said receipts of transport fares paid by the government were also seized from the detainees. This also suggests that the fertilisers were supplied by government agencies. Smuggling was carried out in a truck (Na 4 Kha 5978) during night time.
Farmers said opportunist traders sell government-subsidised fertilisers for over Rs 3,000 a sack, taking advantage of shortage. Consumer rights activist Achyut Dhakal said smugglers were active in the district and they also supply fertilisers to Ramechhap through Sindhuli.
A few days ago, police had confiscated 50 sacks of subsidised chemical fertilisers en route to Ramechhap. The country is facing an acute chemical fertiliser shortage amid this paddy plantation season.
