Sculpting cherished moments

KATHMANDU, JUL 15 -

There was a rather curious stall on display at the sixth International Indigenous Film Festival; something people would not have expected to find there at all. Surrounded by a throng of visitors, the stall displayed a phenomenon that is very new in Nepal. It has been three months since Nishan Rai started her business of sculpting hands and feet—kept as popular keepsakes in many parts of the world—in Nepal, and its popularity is ever increasing. Sculpted in gold and silver frames and standings, the craft employs a masterful use of technology and creativity.

“It gives you the opportunity of capturing a moment in your life that will be forever cherished”, said Rai who learned the craft during her stay in Australia. Tarabajee, as she calls it, gives you the chance to capture a moment and freeze it ; in a form and shape that can be displayed upon your showcase or living room walls forever. The sculptures can be ordered for one or both hands or feet:

couple’s hands, the hands and feet of babies and parents, those of adults and senior citizens as well. The hand and foot prints are initially molded on stone and later chemically processed (with complete accuracy in terms of their size and shape).

Rai’s formal business in Nepal began the founding of her organisation Tarabajee. “It is the best gift one can give to one’s children. They can cherish fond childhood memories forever; this is very commendable creation of Nishan’s”, says Gyanu Raja Maharjan—a client.

Although not particularly art or stone carving, foot and hand prints are regenerated as stone sculptures. Rai seems confident in her business, and the response of her clients is

overwhelmingly positive. “Thisis a physical documentation of what your children looked like when they were very young; it gives you a sense of attachment to your young ones,” said Rai, who was busy interacting with a large crowd that had gather around her at the event. “I am electrified by these sculptures and I am planning to make one for my grandmother as a birthday gift”, said Salil Maharjan, one of the spectators who looked thoroughly impressed by Rari’s work.

A hand or foot sculpture will be tailor made for you within 10-15 days for a sum of Rs 10,000-20,000
