12 killed in Dhading bus plunge

GORKHA, AUG 08 -

Twelve people were killed when a Kathmandu-bound passenger bus plunged into a river along the Prithvi Highway in Dhading district early on Tuesday.

The bus that had left Butwal on Monday evening plunged nearly 200 metres into the Mahesh river at Kamerdanda in Bhumesthan VDC-6 at around 4:30 am. Ten were killed on the spot, while two others died undergoing treatment. At least 35 passengers were injured and 23 of them were taken to the Capital for treatment. The others were admitted to a Dhading-based hospital.

Police identified 10 of the dead as Baliram Chaudhary of Kapilvastu, Abadh Kishor Chaudhary of Kapilvastu, Mohan Nagarkoti of Rupandehi, Ram Milan Chaudhary of Rupandehi, Phanindra Subedi of Rupandehi, Shushila Gharti Magar of Rupandehi, Ranjan Thapa of Rupandehi, Sher Bahadur Thapa of Rupandehi, Keshav Sharu of Arghakhanchi and Parbati Gharti Magar of Gulmi. Six bodies were handed over to the relatives.

Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel carried out a rescue operation with help from local people. In July, road accidents claimed lives of over 100 people in districts like Darchula, Dhading, Nawalparasi, Arghakhanchi and Palpa. Most of these accidents were caused due to overspeed and bad road conditions.   

3 killed in Inaruwa crash Meanwhile, three persons were killed in a three-way crash involving a truck, a motorcycle and a vehicle of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at Sakhuwagachhi in Inaruwa in Sunsari district on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the speeding truck hit a motorcycle, went out of control and then ploughed onto the oncoming SUV.

Motorcycle rider Bijay Kumar Sharma of Birtnagar, pillion rider Buddhamal Jain, said to be an Indian national, and SUV driver Radheshyam Thapa of Kathmandu died in the accident. Two other passengers trapped inside the SUV were rescued by the police and local people. The driver is at large following the accident, according to the police.
