KATHMANDU, AUG 08 -

Vehicular movement came to a halt on Tuesday morning for the third day in a row due to a shutdown called by the CPN-UML-affiliated Youth Association Nepal.

In the nationwide YAN move to mount pressure on Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to step down, vehicles were kept off roads from 6am to 10am. As a result, most schools began classes at 11am.

Irate YAN cadres vandalised a truck (Ba 1 Ka 4496), a tempo (Na 1 Ha 727) in Chitwan, a garbage vehicle, a truck (Ba 2 Kha 2234) at Sallaghari, Bhaktapur, and a taxi (Ba 1 Ja 1215) in front of Chappal Karkhana, Maharajgunj, for defying the banda.

On Tuesday, 17 youth and student associations affiliated to various opposition parties held a joint meeting, which decided to further the protest programmes. Additional events include picketing the Ministers’ Quarters in Pulchowk, Lalitpur, on August 12 from 9am to 11am, a nationwide vote against the incumbent government on August 13, a nationwide torch rally on August 15 and an eight-hour nationwide banda on August 16.

On August 10, the YAN is scheduled to gherao Singha Durbar. However, the youth association has decreased the banda period by one hour—from 6am to 9am—for Wednesday, so as not to inconvenience students, diplomatic missions and other service sectors.

“We will not hamper educational institutions, missions and service sectors and their transportation during our strikes on Wednesday and later,” said YAN Treasurer Niru Pun.

Nevertheless, no vehicles carrying ministers would be allowed to ply. Nor will government vehicles be able to go around on a public holiday. Street protests would continue until the Bhattarai-led government disbands.
