KAVRE, AUG 08 -

With the illegal organ trade running rampant in the district, police have intensified their efforts to put a halt to the trafficking of kidneys in Kavre.

“Police have been deployed in civvies to search for kidney racketeers round the clock,” said Superintendent of Police, Pashupati Upadhyay.

A security team from the district arrested Binod Mijar Sarki, accused of involvement in the illegal kidney trade, a few months ago. Sarki, who was on the most wanted list of the Metropolitan Police Circle (MPC), Maharajgunj, was later handed over to the MPC for further investigation.

“Sarki was found to have been long involved in the kidney racket by the investigation,” said Surendra Prasad Mainali, chief of the District Police Office.

However, two alleged kidney traders, Bed Bahadur Budhathoki and Prem Bajagain, are still absconding.

The illegal kidney trade has swept through most Panchkhal, Hokse, Jyamdi and Baluwa VDCs. Hardly a single house remains where at least one family member hasn’t traded away one of their kidneys.

Victims and locals have lodged complaints at the District Administration Office and the police, demanding punishment for the traffickers. They submitted a memorandum with a list of culprits to both Mainali and Chief District Officer Rudranath Basyal.

According to available data, 103 people have sold off one of their kidneys so far this year, up from 80.

Mainali said police are leaving no stone unturned in the investigation to bring the organ traffickers to book.
