AUG 12 -

The Paleti Utsav, which began on August 9 and will be coming to an end tonight, has proved to be a wonderful occasion for all aadhunik Nepali sangeet aficionados. The festival brought together some of the genre’s greatest and most loved in a celebration of Nepali aadhunik music, and in the process, has gained more fans for the genre.

Veteran singers Ambar Gurung, Phatteman and Shanti Thatal performed on the first, second and third days of the festival respectively while nepa~laya’s own Aavaas— who coordinated the 13-member orchestra who played on all three days—will be performing tonight. The festival, which is taking place at DAV School’s Buddha Hall in Jhamsikhel, has so far, proven impeccable in terms of the attention paid to details such as stage setting, light and sound.

The festival began with Ambar Gurung’s solo performance. The legendary singer and composer lent his versatile vocals to songs that ranged from the sentimental and romantic to the classical. Ciney Gurung, one of the many noted singers who attended the live show shared, “I feel blessed  for this opportunity to witness Ambar Gurung performing live.” The 74 year old veteran musician, who is one of the bestselling classical artists of this era, is currently not in good health, and Thursday’s performance might very well have been one of his last live shows. In fact, many of the attendees at the concert had come there just to see the legendary figure on stage.

In between his songs Gurung shared anecdotes from his youth, and also talked about his musical journey with Narayan Gopal. He also talked about how one of his most well-known songs Rato Ra Chandra Surya, is also among his fastest composed ones. “I finished composing the song in 15 minutes,” he shared.

The second day of the Paleti Utsav was just as musically mesmerising. Phatteman, another legendary figure of Nepali aadhunik sangeet, enthralled audiences with around 18 songs which included some well-loved versions of Marna Baru Garo, Banai Khayo Dadelo Ley and Kasto Maya. The singer even found the time to crack some jokes with Aavaas and add a bit of joy to an ambience that had soaked itself up in the sorrowful notes of his melancholic songs.

Darjeeling-based singer Shanti Thatal performed on the festival’s third day. She too, sang some 18 songs that included popular and much-loved numbers such as Samalera Rakha, Mayalule Samjhyo Ki and Udhi Jau Bhaney, among others.

Today is the last day of the Paleti Utsav. Singer Aavaas will be performing a mix of some of his original songs coupled with a few other popular tunes
