KATHMANDU, AUG 12 -

Bangladesh made a winning start to their U-19 World Cup campaign with an impressive 25-run win over Sri Lanka in their Group ‘D’ game on Saturday. The opening day also saw wins for hosts and defending champions Australia, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

At Brisbane’s Alan Border Stadium, Bangladesh posted 247 runs on the board after electing to bat first. Aaman ul-haq was impressive with the bat, scoring the game high 101 runs. In reply, Sri Lanka managed just 224 runs, losing all their wickets in 48.4 overs.

In Group ‘A’, which also includes Nepal, England and Ireland, home team Australia routed old foes England by six wickets.

England, the champions of the tournament in 1998, managed a meager total of 143 runs, which was chased down by the Australians in quick time. They race to the target, making 147 runs for the loss of four wickets in the 35th over. Pakistan also had it easy against Afghanistan in the first game of Group ‘B’. Electing to the bat first after winning the toss, Pakistan posted a mammoth total of 253 runs, but the lowly Afghan side struggled to meet the target, conjuring up just 144 runs in 45.1 over without any wickets at their disposal to hand their opponents an easy 109-run win.

Pakistani bowler Jiya ul-haq was an important man in the rout as he conceded just 30 win claiming four wickets. Likewise, in the Group ‘C’ match, Zimbabwe proved a mismatch for minnows Papua New Guinea, who could manage just 145 runs in reply to Zimbabwe’s 250 runs.
