KATHMANDU, AUG 08 - Transport entrepreneurs have announced a fresh stir to press for the fulfilment of their demands including the formation of a separate ministry. They have warned of bringing the entire public transport to a grinding halt from August 10.

Oganising a press conference in the Capital on Wednesday, four transport workers union—Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, All Nepal Transport Workers Association, Nepal Transport Workers Association and Independent Transport Workers’ Association of Nepal—have announced a joint agitation.

As part of their scheduled programme, they will submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. They will take to the streets from Friday to get their demands fulfilled if their demands were not addressed.

Likewise, the Federation of Nepal Truck and Tanker Entrepreneurs have also expressed solidarity with the agitating transporters union.

The transporters have put forth various demands including the formation of a separate ministry of transport management, reorganisation of transport sector as industry, termination of the extra authority delegated to the traffic police, enforcement of social security in transportation sector and strict implementation of insurance policy.

At the press meet, President of Federation Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, Yogendranath Karmacharya demanded that the street should be declared as peace zones. He accused the current government of being more troublesome to transport workers than the erstwhile Panchayat era government.
