KATHMANDU, JUN 24 -
More than 3,000 people joyously marked the International Olympic Day organized by the Nepal Olympic Committee on Saturday.
Nepal’s first Olympian Bhupendra Silwal, who represented the country in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, led the torch rally that was followed by people ranging from all walks of life, including the British Ambassador to Nepal HE John Anthony Tucknott MBE.
The Olympic symbol, five interlocking rings, coloured blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white field, imprinted on the T-shirts of the enthusiastic participants decorated the streets from Jawalakhel to the Patan Durbar Square, where the procession converged into a mass gathering to be joined by the locals of the vicinity. Addressing the function, Tucknott said the Great Britain, the hosts of the 2012 Olympics in London next month, was proud to be welcoming the athletes from around the world, especially Nepal, in the summer games.
“You should be proud of the athletes of your country who have participated in the Olympics since 1964. It’s not about winning but it’s about taking part in the games,” said Tucknott, wishing for the success of the games.
Five participants from Nepal are competing in the event. Tika Ram Tharu and Pramila Rijal will compete in athletics, while Shreya Dhital and Prasidha Jung Shah are in swimming team. Sneha Rana will compete in shooting.
