KATHMANDU, JUN 24 -

Nepal started their Under-19 Asia Cup campaign on a bitter note as they suffered an eight-wicket thrashing from Pakistan at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Sent in to bat first, Nepal could not withstand the discipline bowling attack of tournament favourites Pakistan as they were bundled out in 46.1 overs with just 156 runs on the board.

Chasing a modest target, opener Sami Aslam scored 82 runs while he was equally supported by his partner Babar Azam (48) to take Pakistan home in 37.3 overs losing two wickets. Man-of-the-match Aslam smashed 12 fours in his 115-ball stay, while Azam hit five boundaries. They shared a 98-run partnership for the first wicket before Rahul Vishwakarma broke the stand in the 23rd over. Sagar Pun struck the wicket of Imam-ul-Haq in the 32nd over, but it was too little too late for Nepal.

Earlier, after losing both the openers—Subash Khakurel (6) and Pradeep Airee (18)—with just 29 runs on the board, Naresh Budayair came in and stitch a valuable partnership of 40 runs with captain Prithu Baskota to revive Nepal’s hopes but Budayair knock of 34 runs came to an end when he was run out to leave Nepal tottering at 101 for four. Baskota scored 28 runs while Rajesh Pulami Magar and Vishwakarma contributed 23 and 13 runs respectively to give some respect to Nepal’s total.

Azizullah and Mohammad Nawaz took two wickets each for Pakistan. In other matches of the group A, South Asian giants India battered Malaysia by eight wickets.

Nepal are on third position in the group table led by India. Pakistan trail India with inferior run-rate, while Malaysia are at the bottom of the table. Nepal will take on Malaysia on Sunday.

Pakistan v Nepal

Pakistan 157/2 in 37.3 overs (S Aslam 82*) beat Nepal 156/10 in 46.1 overs (N Budhayair 34, P Baskota 28) by eight wickets
