BAJURA, JUL 12 -
An apple planting campaign is picking up pace in food-starved Bajura. This far-western district faces crippling shortages of food every year and depends on subsidised rice for sustenance most months.
Within just one year ago the drive has spread to eight VDCs—Jagannath, Badhu, Jukot, Wai, Rugini, Bichhya, Sappata and Gotri.
“We started the campaign last year to alleviate the food crisis and support long term development of the district,” said Kedar Poudel, Bajura, manager of Support Activities for Poor Producers of Nepal (SAPPROS-Nepal), an NGO that led the campaign. Poudel said that so far more than 105,000 apple and 38,000 walnut saplings had been planted on around 500 hectares.
In the initial phase, 33,000 apple saplings were planted last year. After taking note of the fast growth rate of the saplings, 72,000 more were planted this year in coordination with the District Agriculture Office (DAO).
DAO officer Rewatiraj Sharma said his office is providing technical support for the programme.
