KATHMANDU, JUL 04 -

The GP Koirala Foundation for Democracy, Peace and Development organised a programme in memory of the late leader on his 89th birth anniversary at the Shanker Hotel, Lazimpat on July 2. The commemoratory event—built around the theme of the ‘role citizens can play in the current political climate’—saw retired judge of the Supreme Court, Anup Raj Sharma participate as the chief guest. Other honourable guests included chairperson of the GP Koirala Foundation, Sujata Koirala, Kedar Bhakta Mathema (PhD), Kapil Shrestha, Rajesh Hamal and Sambhu Ram Simkhada.

The formal commencement of the programme was marked by the requisite act of lighting of a lamp and offering a garland to late Girija Prasad Koirala’s portrait. An album, composed entirely of words and phrases uttered by the late leader in course of his long and illustrious political career was also launched at the programme. Composed by musicians Sumit Khadka and Shankar Kharel, the album is a tribute to Koirala.

A talk programme, in the course of which guests shared their individual views and opinions on the various roles Nepali citizens need to play in the current political situation was the highlight of the event. Chief guest Sharma talked about how the political climate that currently prevails in the country should—and in all respects must—have been very different from what really is. Actor Hamal, on the other hand, spoke about how the present political scenario is affecting the lives of all Nepali citizens. A speech by the chief guest on the programme’s theme of citizen’s roles followed this discussion.  Sharma, once again, talked about a possible alternate state of political affairs, and went on to explain how things would have been different were Koirala still among us today.
