The National Sports Council (NSC) has honoured the medal winners in various international sports meet held last year amid a programme on its premises on Wednesday.
The NSC awarded Rs 7,510 to gold medal winners in official tournaments and Rs 2890 to winners in non-official tournaments, amounting the total cash prize to Rs 374,950 to 61
athletes who had competed in 11 different international meets, including seven official tournaments.
A nine-member committee headed by NSC’s planning commission chief Kamal Khanal had selected the athletes to be honoured.
Martial Arts athletes, mostly karatekas, dominated the award programme with their golds won in various tournaments in the South Asian region.
From that too, athletes who had competed in the Second Fajilatunnesa Inter-national Martial Arts Meet where Nepal had made a clean sweep, wining all 14 gold medals, were the majority.
Then came the weightlifters of the South Asia Weightlifting Championship in Nepalgunj with five claims. The Second Bodorio Karate Championship in Gujrat had seven winners, while there were two winners in the same spPartial or one-third budget?
Finance Ministry at a lossort in other tournament held in same place.
Taekwondo, once the pride of the country, had a relatively lower claim with just two medal winners in Bangaldesh that too in an unofficial tournament.
But the First Mount Everest Taekwondo Championship held in Kathmandu compensated for the loss to some extent, with five gold medal winners.
Likewise, there were nine judokas in two different tournaments in Kathmandu and Islamabad, while other minor tournaments took home the cash prizes.
