KATHMANDU, JUL 04 -
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the authorities involved in executing the Kathmandu Valley road expansion project to build accessible sidewalks and footpaths for the people with disability.
Issuing a press release on Tuesday, the country’s autonomous statutory body appealed to the Kathmandu Valley Town Development Authority (KVTDA), the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), the Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City and the Bhaktapur Municipality to respect and take into account the rights and needs of the disabled people while constructing any kind of infrastructure.
Citing the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (NCCRPD), to which Nepal is a signatory, the NHRC called on the government to address the problems that disabled face in navigating the city’s infrastructure.
“The government initiative to widen Valley roads and ease city traffic is laudable,” read the statement, adding that the expansion of roads will greatly benefit the public. “However, unless all people, including persons with disabilities, can benefit from such infrastructure, development will be incomplete,” the statement further said.
According to the NHRC, building ramps on footpaths and roads for persons in wheelchairs and with canes is just one easy solution towards making the city friendlier for those with disabilities.
