KATHMANDU, JUL 04 -
Rigorous campaigns launched by the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) against traffic rule violators have generated a whopping Rs 108.66 million in revenue this fiscal year.
The amount collected in fines from the three districts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur in the Valley is more than three times last fiscal year’s revenue of Rs 34.995 million.
Although the exact data is unavailable, the MTPD claims it penalised over 100,000 traffic rule violators in the three districts.
The traffic police has launched various campaigns aimed at drunk driving, illegal parking, overboarding, jaywalking and mandatory seatbelts.
MTPD officials attributed the rise in revenue collection mainly to the anti-drunk driving campaign and rigorous steps taken to enforce traffic rules and punish their violators.
The anti-drunk driving campaign alone generated Rs 31.95 million in the last seven months. Cops fined 37,279 drunk drivers since December 3 last year. They have been penalising 200 drivers on an average in the three districts every day.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ganesh Rai, the head of the MTPD, said an additional Rs 2 million is likely to be generated by the end of this fiscal year.
“Various campaigns are being enforced rigorously in the Valley. Apart from generating revenue, they have brought about a significant decline in road accidents and deaths,” Rai said.
MTPD officials claim that the revenue is the outcome of their hard work and stricter measures. The introduction of breathalysers, spectacles and other useful equipment has helped the MTPD campaigns to a great extent.
“Traffic police have been fighting many adversities when it comes to regulating and enforcing traffic rules in the Valley. Our endeavour has produced tangible results,” said Rai.Triumphant MTPD officials said this was just the beginning of their campaign.
